And Nobody Asked for Consent.

The research on dementia is sobering enough on its own.

But here is what concerns us deeply — and perhaps should concern all of us as parents, caregivers, and professionals working with children.

We already know the brain has a remarkable self-cleaning system. During deep sleep, the glymphatic system flushes out toxic waste — including the very proteins linked to neurological decline. It is the brain’s nightly maintenance cycle. Miss it consistently, and the debris accumulates. Silently. Over years. Over decades.

Now look at what we are quietly normalising in our homes:

📱 Screens until midnight — blue light suppressing melatonin and delaying the deep sleep the brain depends on

🔔 Notifications fragmenting sleep architecture at the exact hours the brain does its most important work

🎮 Gadget dependency in children — overstimulating developing brains before their architecture is even fully formed

😴 Chronic sleep deprivation — worn by adults as a badge of productivity, and increasingly becoming the invisible normal for children too

We are not just talking about tired children.

We are talking about a generation growing up with disrupted sleep as their baseline — at precisely the stage of life when the brain is laying the foundations it will rely on for the next 70 or 80 years.

The science of dementia tells us something important here. Today’s epidemic was not created overnight. It was seeded quietly — over years — by lifestyle factors that were ignored, minimised, or simply not understood at the time.

So the uncomfortable question we must sit with is this:

What are we seeding right now?

The gadget in your child’s hand at bedtime is not just a parenting inconvenience to manage. It may be the slow, invisible accumulation of a neurological risk we will only fully understand 30 or 40 years from now — when course-correcting for an entire generation is no longer possible.

This is not about guilt. Every parent today is navigating a world that was not designed with children’s brain health in mind. Screens are everywhere. Schedules are relentless. Sleep feels like a luxury rather than a biological necessity.

But awareness is where change begins.

Sleep is not laziness. It is the brain taking out its own trash.

Protect it — in yourself, and especially in your children — while the window to do so is still wide open.

At Locus Therapy, we work with families to understand the full picture of a child’s development — including the everyday factors that shape how a child’s brain grows, regulates, and thrives. Because the smallest daily habits often carry the greatest long-term weight.

Inspired by “The Terrorist in the Brain” by William Meller, MD — featured in Marcellus Investment Managers’ weekly reading, July 2026, originally published in Skeptic magazine.

The research on dementia is sobering enough on its own.
