Is AI Raising a Generation of “Autopilot Minds”? What Parents Should Know

Ask any question and get an instant answer. Skip the boring paragraph and get a summary instead. Let an app finish the homework, the drawing, even the thinking.

This is the world children are growing up in now — and as occupational therapists, it should give us pause.

Not because AI is bad. It isn’t. But because the skills we spend our careers helping children build — problem-solving, sustained attention, tolerating frustration, working through a task from start to finish — are exactly the skills that get bypassed when a tool does the thinking for a child before they’ve had a chance to try.

The hidden cost of instant answers

There’s a pattern showing up in classrooms and therapy rooms alike: children whose output looks fine on the surface — a neatly finished worksheet, a well-structured piece of writing — but who struggle to explain how they got there, or freeze completely when the task changes slightly.

That gap matters. A child who has never had to sit with “I don’t know yet” hasn’t built the tolerance for uncertainty that real learning, and real life, requires. A child who never struggles with a hard problem doesn’t get the chance to develop the executive function skills — planning, flexible thinking, self-monitoring — that struggle is actually for.

In OT terms: skill development happens in the difficulty, not around it. If a tool consistently removes the difficulty, it can quietly remove the developmental opportunity too.

This isn’t about banning technology

The instinct to lock AI out of a child’s world entirely is understandable, but it’s not realistic, and it’s not necessary. These children will grow up alongside these tools for the rest of their lives. The goal isn’t control — it’s teaching them to stay in the driver’s seat.

A few habits, introduced early, go a long way:

Ask before you answer. Before reaching for a device, encourage the child to guess, attempt, or explain what they think first. The guess itself is the cognitive work — the answer is almost beside the point.

Compare, don’t copy. When a tool does provide an answer, talk through it together: Does this match what you thought? What’s different? This turns a passive answer into an active thinking exercise.

Build in productive struggle. Resist the urge to smooth every obstacle. A child stuck on a puzzle, a tricky sentence, or a fiddly fastening isn’t failing — they’re doing the exact work their brain needs. Support them through it rather than around it.

Where this matters most for children with additional needs

For children who already find attention, sequencing, or frustration tolerance harder, the pull toward the path of least resistance is even stronger — and the stakes are higher. These are often the children who most need repeated, scaffolded practice at staying with a hard task, not the least.

This is where a therapist’s role becomes more important, not less. Helping a child build a genuine skill — rather than borrow a shortcut — is slower, and it’s the whole point.

A simple question for parents and professionals

Next time a child reaches for a device to solve something, it’s worth pausing on one question: is this tool helping them think, or thinking for them?

The answer doesn’t have to be no to technology. It just has to keep the child’s own mind switched on.
